’90s called, they want their look back – Spring/Summer 2012′s hottest look is set to be the bralet top. Spotted on runways of the creme de la creme including Prada, Dolce Gabbana, Versace, Jason Wu, Donna Karan, Pucci, Blumarine and now sported by the likes of Jessie J, Pixie Lott and Selena Gomez (Rihanna and Solange have long been fans!), the bralet is actually not as risque as it looks to pull off.
You can pair a bralet up with a range of different looks without looking like you forgot to put on a shirt – from a prim pencil skirt to create a sexy ’50s look to a long-flowing maxi to opt for a more boho style. Whatever you do, make sure your belly button is not on show as this year’s bralet pairings favour high waisted looks which gives just a tiny glimpse of your upper torso (just as well, as this tends to be the fitter part of our midriff).
And the playful trend has long been a staple of African runways with Madam Wokie most recently sending models down the ramp clad in playful patterned bralets at Arise Magazine Fashion Week, while Gloria Wawamunno, Chenai and Re Bahia had long cottoned on to the trend as early as 2011. An ideal trend to rock whole year around in the endless African summer.
Experiment with a array of colours and prints available on the high street, or if you are after a safer option (After all, you’re going out with a bra!) and settle for black or white one – with a range of choices on the high street from lace to leather, you’re equally set to make a statement.
Tips:
1. Make sure you go for high-waisted bottoms – remember, with this look, less is more, and in this case a tiny few inches of your midriff.
2. Do your tummy crunches!
3. Make sure your bralet is a good fit – slouchy cups hanging on your bosom or ‘cups runneth over’ are not good looks!
