How to Wear Polka Dots Perfectly

The polka dot may be considered a classic print, but its striking effect can be intimidating to some.
Maybe they look too childish or too difficult to match, and too pretentious to work for every occasion.
. Still, dots come and go every season, and with a few simple rules, they can totally change our look, and can transform any dull outfit into a chic, slightly retro and romantic look, even uber-feminine and sophisticated.

Polka dots made a strong come back for spring/summer 2010 and they are here to stay. They are certainly one of the most eye-catching and striking prints whether we are talking about a clothing item or an accessory. Therefore, it is very important to know when and especially how to wear them. However, they still remain a classic element in the fashion history. For summer you have so many options and versions of polka dots from discreet to more extravagant ones.

The ‘50s style has made a strong comeback this season, and it is not true at all that dots should be only included in the wardrobe of young girls, as for more mature women dots can be matched to a classic, casual or elegant outfit.

The main rule says never to match many pieces with dots unless you want to turn your outfit into a great fiasco. A dress, a skirt, a shirt or a blazer can be enough. If you are totally convinced that you are ready to wear polka dots, start by choosing only one accessory such as a scarf, a belt, a handbag and even shoes.

Office style

Black and white is probably one of the winning combination that never fails. For an office, summer look, a pleated dress can flatter you as it can hide the flaws around your waist and hips. Moreover, it will give you a dose of femininity and elegance that a woman should never lose.

As for the colors, white dress with black dots is the best and safest choice. You can also match a black pleated skirt with white dots, a blouse with short sleeves and a bolero or a blazer. You can play a little bit and choose colored accessories especially. Wear ballerina flats or high-heeled shoes.

Evening look

For a night out with your friends you must look very sexy. Therefore, match a pair of skinny jeans, a strapless breezy blouse with dots and high-heeled sandals. If you team black high-waisted shorts and a red blouse with dots, and high heels you will certainly be an unique appearance. On the other side, for a more formal evening event, choose a '70s style black dress with white dots and high-heeled sandals.

Accessorize the outfit with a simple clutch and a pair of pearl earrings. Black and white is not the only possible combination that can reflect elegance. You can also choose beige or navy blue, and red when it comes to accessories.

Casual

For the hot summer days, a breezy dress with polka dots can be the perfect choice for a casual look. You can choose a white one with black dots, or you can play with colors. A white skirt with dots and a red or black blouse with flat shoes or sandals can be a comfortable option.

For an effortless, simple summer look, try matching a top with dots, a straight-cut navy blue skirt and a pair of ballerina flats or flat sandals. You just need to complete the look by choosing the right accessories such as a large handbag, oversized sunglasses and small earrings.

  • Even though they seem pretty hard to match, pants with dots can be easily worn for any occasion if they are properly accessorized. Choose a pair with colorful dots and keep the rest of the outfit simple by picking accessories in neutral colors. You can also wear polka dots shorts for a casual summer look. As for the shoes, go for peep-toe shoes or flat sandals.

  • You can even dare and mix polka dots and other prints such as stripes and still look amazing. If usually, mixing floral prints and stripes, or dots and floral has been considered as a total fashion disaster especially if you weren't able to pull the look together, nowadays this is rather easy to achieve.
